Be mindful of the fake apology - the 'I'm sorry you feel that way' apology:
- I'm sorry you feel hurt
- I'm sorry you took that personally
- I'm sorry you're feeling....
The person isn't apologising but simply stating how they can see you're feeling.
But, likewise, be mindful of the person who's learned to give a 'real' apology:
- I'm sorry for what I said
- I'm sorry for making you upset
- I'm sorry I wasn't being very thoughtful there
If these are not followed by a change in behaviour, these are still fake apologies. If someone doesn't change the way they behave that's causing upset, then they're not actually sorry.
Or, if you're guilty of offering fake apologies, maybe it's time to have an honest look in the mirror.
