I wonder if show-offs don't simply rub us the wrong way because they have something to show off that we don't? Because their show-off highlights a sore point?
Show off your Ferrari and I don't care because that's not my thing.
Show off your weight loss and I'm more likely to feel annoyed because I've hit a persistent plateau.
